Antique bracelets
are popular with jewellery collectors the world over. They make an excellent investment and a fantastic
alternative to today's off the shelf, mass produced pieces. These bracelets feature craftsmanship and
attention to detail sadly lacking to those produced today. They are often handcrafted and the workmanship is
simply out of this world. An antique bracelet makes an excellent gift for a loved one. Art Deco pieces
are always a firm favourite. With their clean lines and timeless elegance, they are especially popular
today. Victorian pieces can only increase in value as they gradually grow scarcer and scarcer. An
antique bracelet is not just a sound investment and thing of beauty, it's a piece of history to be treasured and
passed down the family for generations to come. Antique and retro bracelets come in an unbelievable range of
styles and are extremely versatile. Diamonte bracelets are great for jazzing up denim and evening wear.
Vintage immitation jewellery can fetch unimaginable prices today. There's an unquenchable thirst for the
works of some of those early designers and these pieces can only go up in value. For those with a bigger
budget, diamond tennis bracelets never go out of fashion - they're simply stunning - a real head turner. Some
of the chunkier cuffs and bangles in silver and gold are great for daywear and a bit of glamour. Antique
bracelets are available featuring every gemstone imaginable in every concievable metal and style. There's
something on the market to suit all tastes and budgets be it for yourself, or that special
someone.

Antique and vintage
bracelets are highly collectible today. A 1930s, 1940s or 1950s bracelet makes a great investment. The
word ‘antique’ can only be used for items over one hundred years old. You have not just a piece of highly
enjoyable, stylish jewellery to admire for years to come, but a nest egg for the future. More and more people
are investing in gold in these times of economic uncertainty.
A
History of Bracelets
Bracelets are one
of earliest forms of jewellery. They were particularly popular in ancient Egypt where they were usually
crafted from gold. It’s a little known fact that during this era silver was actually deemed more valuable
than gold in the Middle East. Unfortunately, due to silver’s susceptibility to deterioration, few silver
pieces still remain, though gold relics aplenty are uncovered each year. The slave bracelet was particularly
popular amongst the ancient Egyptians and serpent designs were common. This style of bangle was also the
fashion with the ancient Greeks and Romans. Bangle style bracelets, either smooth or of a twisted rope
design, with ball or lion head ends were particularly popular with the Romans. Precious stones were often
used for the lion’s eyes.
In Medieval times
the demand for bracelets subsided somewhat. The fashion during this era was long sleeves, particularly in
Britain and Europe, and necklaces and rings became a more effective way to show off the owner’s status and
wealth.
In Georgian times
bracelets grew in popularity as sleeve lengths shortened again. Gold was the metal of choice and some
stunning pearl edged designs came out of Paris at this time. The use of gemstones gradually increased and
spread to semi precious stones such as turquoise, moonstone and coral. This was, of course, the age where the
British empire was reaching out across the oceans and it’s pioneers returning home in their hoards with sparkling
stones from far off shores for their loved ones.

During Victorian
times, bangles grew in popularity, particularly in gold with etched designs and buckle
details.
In the Art Nouveau
period, the Egyptian revival really picked up pace, and serpents and scarabs decorate many bracelets from this
period. Art Nouveau took the fashion world back to nature, with pieces featuring dragonflies, peacocks,
butterflies and flowers.
With the advent of
the flappers and their sleeveless party dresses, the Art Deco period saw the return to favour of the slave
bangle. Some wonderful examples occasionally come on to the market, encapsulating the era with sleek designs
and geometric patterns, made from the white gold and platinum so fashionable today and encrusted with precious
stones and diamonds.
